I’m Sally, an end-of-life guide and death doula in Brooklyn, and my practice is called Going Your Own Way. I came to this work after caring for my mother at the end of her life in 2023. Along with my doula practice, I work as a companion for older adults, many of them living with dementia, and volunteer with hospice. Before this, I spent 20 years in HR and operations helping people through change and hard conversations, and I bring that same practical, organized support to people facing serious illness or the end of life. I’m comfortable with conversations most people avoid, bringing respect and a little humor, and I’m just as comfortable sitting quietly when talking feels like too much. I welcome you and whoever you consider family, whatever your background, and I respect your relationshi

How I work

We start with a free conversation to get to know one another and talk about where I could help. Afterward, I'll put together a proposal showing what support could look like and what it costs. There’s no pressure to move forward, and we can adjust the proposal as your needs change.

During each visit, I take my cues from the person I’m with; we might talk, look through photos, listen to music, or just spend time together. I pay attention to what helps them feel comfortable and heard, and I help share their wishes with the people around them. I also support family and caregivers, whether that’s sorting through next steps or preparing questions for the hospice team, and my visits can give you time to rest or step out.

As the final days get closer, I can help plan who they want nearby and what music or traditions they’d like included. After the death, I can stay with you and help with the first calls. My support is non-medical and often works alongside hospice, and my aim is for everyone involved to feel more prepared and less alone.

Talk to Sally D.

You do not need to have the right words ready or know what you are asking for. Tell us who you are caring for and pay the $75 matching fee. Sally D. will reach out within 24 hours to find a time. If no call happens, write to hello@bearwitness.app and we will match you with someone else at no extra cost.

The fee covers your introduction, our coordination with your doula, and the vetting standards every Bear Witness doula is held to. Anything you agree with Sally D. after that is between you and them.
