What is a death doula?
If you are caring for a husband, a wife, a mom, or a dad who is dying, here is what this is, in plain words, without anyone selling you anything.
What does a death doula actually do?
A death doula is a non-medical companion for the person who is dying and for you, the one caring for them. The work is practical and emotional at the same time: sitting through the night, explaining what is happening to the body, helping with advance directives and legacy recordings, giving you a chance to sleep, and staying present through the hours that are hardest to sit in alone.
How is that different from hospice?
Hospice is a medical benefit. Nurses, aides, medication, and visits that are short and scheduled. A doula fills the long hours in between, which is where most of the weight lands on you. Many doulas work right alongside a hospice team, and bringing one in does not change your hospice care at all.
When should I reach out?
Sooner than most people do. A lot of families call in the last few days, and there is still real comfort in that. With weeks or months, a doula can do much more: planning, recorded stories for your kids, and time to prepare everyone, including you, for what is coming.
What does it cost?
Every family's needs are different. Contact the doula directly for pricing and to talk through what kind of support would be right for you.
My family is close. Do I really need one?
Close families still get exhausted, still disagree about the hard decisions, and still hesitate to say the important things out loud. A doula is often most useful for exactly that reason. They love your person too, but they are not inside the family.
Does this mean I am giving up on them?
No. A doula does not change a single thing about treatment or hospice decisions. Bringing one in means the person you love has company and you have help, whatever happens next.
Death cafes and gatherings
Death cafes are informal gatherings where people talk openly about dying over tea and cake. They are where a lot of people first hear the words death doula, and where you can sit with others who are carrying something similar.
